Counting Flowers on the Wall

Counting Flowers on the Wall

If we have a thought, “I’m going crazy and losing control of my mind“, then we are going to
increase our focus on the symptoms.
And when we increase the focus on the symptoms, and we feel this way, that reinforces the idea
that we actually are going crazy and losing our minds.
So both of these things turn into these cycles that repeat round and round and amplify these ideas
in our head.
We can target those metacognitive beliefs with metacognitive therapy, and in general, the therapy
does not need to involve re-experiencing or reliving the trauma. What we can do is pick off the things that are triggering and look at them.
So if you get a cut on your leg, then what you really need to do is give it a quick clean, stick a plaster on it, and let the body heal itself because the body can do that.
If we keep picking at it and tend to it, we are just going to make it worse.
Whereas if we can leave it alone and let the body heal, then things will get better by themselves.
