“Girls mature faster”—is one of the most successful PR campaigns ever run on behalf of inequality.

Girls do not mature faster. Girls are put to work earlier.

What gets mislabeled as “maturity” is actually vigilance. Emotional triage. Reading the room before the room explodes. Knowing when to soothe, when to stay quiet, when to step in because no one else will. That is not accelerated development; it is early assignment to management.

A child who is scanning adults for mood shifts is not wise beyond her years—she is adapting to risk. A girl who can articulate feelings fluently at twelve is not magically evolved—she has been required to translate chaos into calm. A teenager who “handles things so well” is often doing unpaid emotional labour for people who should know better.

Meanwhile, boys are more often granted the luxury of being children. Their messiness is tolerated. Their emotional illiteracy is shrugged off as “boys will be boys.” Their growth is delayed not because they cannot handle responsibility, but because they are not asked to.

Then, years later, the bill comes due.

Women arrive in adulthood fluent in regulation, anticipation, compromise. Men arrive praised for “learning” the basics—listening, self-reflection, empathy—skills women were expected to have before they could vote in the school lunch menu. And the myth persists because it flatters everyone except the girls who paid for it.

Calling this “maturity” is a neat way to erase the cost. It reframes survival skills as innate traits, which conveniently excuses the systems that forced their development in the first place. It also justifies why women should keep carrying the load—after all, they are “better at it.”

Managing situations far beyond your pay grade is not maturity it is conscription.

Once you see that, the narrative flips. The question stops being “Why are women so mature?” and becomes “Why were they required to be?” And who benefited from that arrangement while pretending it was biology instead of expectation.

This shift alone loosens a lot of chains.
