Imagine food.

A preference is liking Italian food more than Chinese food. If someone asks where you would like to eat, you will probably suggest Italian. But if everyone else wants tacos, you will happily go along. You are still capable of enjoying many different foods.

A fetish is different.

A fetish is not simply something you enjoy more. It becomes psychologically tied to arousal itself. For some people, it becomes difficultβ€”or impossibleβ€”to become sexually aroused without that element being present, either physically or in fantasy.

Those are fundamentally different things.

A preference means you notice certain characteristics more often.

β€˜I usually find women with curly hair attractive.’

β€˜I tend to be drawn to brunettes.’

β€˜I often notice Latina women first.’

Those are preferences.

They influence where your attention goes, but they do not define whether you can love, desire, or have fulfilling sex with someone who does not fit that description.

A fetish means the characteristic itself has become part of the sexual mechanism.

The feature is no longer simply attractive.

It has become an object of arousal in its own right.

If I tell you I like tall men, that is a preference.

If I see a tall man, I do not automatically become sexually excited. Most tall men are just… people.

Likewise, someone with a foot fetish does not become aroused by every foot they ever see. A nurse could not do their job if that were true.

Instead, certain contexts activate the fetish.

The foot may need to be a certain shape. Certain shoes. A particular relationship. Specific clothing. Specific scenarios.

It is much more like a lock requiring several keys than a light switch.

Or my infamous Winter Soldier analogy. Sometimes Bucky just wants a hug.

Sometimes someone says a sequence of words and the entire programme activates and that hug might kill you.Β

The common misconception is that β€˜finding someone attractive’ and β€˜having a fetish’ is the same thing.

Which is not true.

Every fetish includes attraction. Almost all attraction does not involve a fetish.

These two sentences are not the same:

β€œYou have a preference for Latina women.”

as

β€œTherefore every Latina woman sexually excites you.”

That simply is not how attraction works.

The overwhelming majority of people with a preference still experience attraction as highly selective. Thousands of people may fit the general description, yet only a handful produce romantic or sexual chemistry.

Owning trainers does not activate a shoe fetish.

Likewise, preferring curly-haired women does not mean every curly-haired woman is sexually exciting.

It just means, all else being equal, your attention is a little more likely to land there.

  • Preference answers: β€œWho am I more likely to notice?”
  • Attraction answers: β€œWho do I actually want?”
  • Fetish answers: β€œWhat has become part of the mechanism that produces arousal?”

Those are three different questions. Once those get collapsed into one, it is very easy to start believing that β€œhaving a type” and β€œhaving a fetish” are interchangeable, when psychologically they are describing very different phenomena.
