A gardener tends a single apple tree. Each year, birds eat some of the fruit before he can harvest it. At first, he is angry. Then he notices something: the years the birds take the most apples, the tree bears the most fruit. The seeds travel. The soil is enriched. The orchard grows.
The apples he does not hoard are the ones that multiply.
