Obligation is a way of saying, βI have no choice in the matter. I have to do this, and that is that.β
However, obligation is also a refusal of your responsibility for the choices you make, how you show up in relationships, and what you do and do not do. It is a way of dis-owning (rather than owning) your part in living out your values, wants, and needs. We do not do things because we are obligated; we do so because we choose to do them.
Obligation is not the same as connection.
You may feel stuck, and it may be easier (and less vulnerable) to go along with what you believe you are obligated to do. Like having to take piano classes because your parents said so.
